Project Summary
Schindler Projects played a pivotal role in the W203 Project, an initiative aimed at transforming the Mercedes-Benz East London operation into a world-class vehicle assembly facility. This project was particularly significant as the plant was designated as the global production hub for all right-hand drive (RHD) C-Class vehicles.
Initially appointed in June 1998 to provide project management services for the Paint Shop, our scope was expanded in December 1998 to oversee all remaining subprojects, ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery.
Project Scope & Key Developments
The W203 Project impacted the entire East London manufacturing plant and included:
- Energy Conversion: Transitioning the plant’s heating system from oil to gas for improved efficiency.
- Paint Shop: Including extensive modifications to the car body feed line as well as the construction of a new, state-of-the-art Paint Shop on a greenfield site.
- Body Shop: Development of a new facility on a site requiring demolition of existing buildings before construction.
- Trim & Mechanical Lines: Comprehensive modifications and upgrades to improve efficiency.
- Axle Assembly Line: Installation of a new line within an existing building.
- Engine Dress-Up Line: Extensive modifications to enhance performance and throughput.
- Finishing Lines: Significant upgrades to existing finishing operations.
- Associated Infrastructure: Upgrades to buildings and bulk infrastructure to support the new facilities.
Through strategic project management, seamless coordination, and rigorous execution, Schindler Projects successfully delivered a high-performance manufacturing environment that met Mercedes-Benz’s global standards.
